The shores of Lake Superior are inviting but even more so with the intense heat wave that has gripped most of the country. We live only 3 miles from Lake Superior but our thermometer registered 90 degrees.
We went for a walk on the Grand Marais break wall to cool off and the temperature there was 70 degrees. What a wonderful relief! We sat there for some time watching boats and kayaks as the fog drifted back and forth. At times the fog would completely cover the lighthouse and a few minutes later the lighthouse would reappear.High Falls Grand Portage State Park
The same rain increased the water levels in most of the north shore streams. At Grand Portage State Park, the amount of water coming over the high falls on the Pigeon River nearly doubled. With that much water dropping about 125 feet the mist makes for a beautiful rainbow or mist bow. To visualize how large this falls is look at the two people in the upper left hand corner of the photo.Kayaking Downtown Grand Marais 001
The intense heat produced a few thunder storms in the area. Almost 4 inches of rain fell in the Grand Marais area flooding a parking lot and a couple of downtown streets. People were kayaking right down the street. Two downtown businesses had water up to their doors.
