Agate Bay, Two Harbors
Recent cold nights have formed ice on several of the bays and harbors along the North Shore. Thursday night I was photographing the sunset at Agate Bay in Two Harbors. After the sun went down I just sat there listening to the groaning, snapping and creaking of moving ice. Sometimes it sounded like some type of monster breathing from the depths of the lake. The incoming swells would slowly lift the new ice and I have to say that these sounds were even better than the visual effects. The ice in this photo is actually moving up and down producing the haze in the ice that you see in this 30 second exposure. When I finished taking pictures I started to skip rocks. The ice was so incredibly smooth that the small rocks would slide right over several of the incoming swells in the ice and continue out of view echoing a sound that can only be described as “Wow”.
