This spring a fox had a den right outside the Gooseberry Visitor Center. Four fox kits were born within 50 feet of the sidewalk. They were in the brush so no one noticed them until they began to leave the den. Of the four kits two have been hit and killed by cars on Hwy 61.
The mom and at least one kit still can be seen regularly. The one kit is getting quite used to people and in the early morning hours can be seen hunting mice and birds around the visitor center. Sometimes birds fly into the visitor center’s windows and the fox regularly snatches them up.
