Adult and Young Pileated Woodpecker
The pileated chicks are now exploring their new world. I can just imagine how exciting it must be to leave their little home in the aspen and fly out into the big world with something new to see around every corner.
I started photographing the chicks about a week ago when they started sticking their heads out of the tree. The first time I went there the adult male was in the hole with the young. When the chicks grow bigger the adults usually feed them from outside the hole. Maybe he had a momentary lapse of reason and thought the mom would feed him also. In one of the attached pictures you can see the adult above the young chick with their heads sticking out of the hole.
